Nepali Rupees (NPR/Rs) is the local currency.
(1 USD = ~ Rs.100 NPR).
We can exchange most of the foreign currencies through local banks and legitimate money exchanges in Kathmandu and all over Thamel. Small amounts of cash can also be exchanged at the hotel.
The ongoing rate of exchange is visibly displayed. The government of Nepal has banned the import, export and use of 500 and 1000 Indian Rupee note in Nepal. You should ensure that you are not carrying these notes on arrival in Nepal as they will be confiscated and you may also be fined.
Despite having security advantage of traveller’scheque, we prefer cash exchange to avoid hassles like a lengthy process and high rate of commission at the banks. You can withdraw cash (in Rupees only) from one of the many ATMs in Kathmandu and Thamel itself. There are quite several ATMs that are open around the clock. The maximum withdrawal amount is 35,000 Rupees for a 500 Rupees processing fee if you are using your foreign card. If you use the money exchange facility at banks and financial institutions the service fee charge imposed is about four percent or more depending upon the bank. Discovery World Trekking has been by far one of the best companies I have ever experienced worldwide. Our itinerary was personalized, and our questions were answered almost immediately when originally emailing back and forth about initial information about certain treks, etc. Once we arrived in Kathmandu, we were greeted by our guide and another member of Discovery World Trekking at the airport. Everything was incredibly organized, and we were made to feel like the company’s top priority. Once on the trek (Annapurna Sanctuary Trek- roughly 7/8 days long), we had the best, most informative, patient, attentive guide - his name was Milan. I have never met a kinder, nicer person who genuinely loves his job as much as Milan. Without him, I do not think we would have made it to ABC. Our porter Amrit was super helpful, and always had a smile on his face. We will definitely be back Trekking with this company again. Highly recommend.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek
We had a wonderful experience with Discovery World Trekking. Paul, the owner, was very helpful and responsive in answering our many questions via email before our trek and checked in with us after arriving back in Pokhara. The best part was working with our highly professional guide Simbir and porter Umess. Simbir was able to provide trail knowledge and advice along the way, and most importantly, he was able to book accommodations along the way that we would not have been able to on our own. After a certain point in the ABC trek, it is required to call ahead for sleeping arrangements. Simbir is well known in the area, and his connections & expertise allowed us to stay at comfortable housing all the way up to base camp. His positive attitude and good sense of our needs helped a really difficult trek feel easy. He even brought fresh fruit that we could enjoy every night after dinner. The Simbir/Umess team was truly full service and they helped us from every interaction - ordering food, collecting safe water, and attending to minor medical needs like sore knees. We felt that the whole trekking process was flexible, and easily tailored to our needs due to Simbir’s expertise. We were lucky to have such an experienced and engaged guide, and would recommend Simbir and Umess to anyone trekking in the region. I thought the ABC trek was going to be a huge trial, but Discovery World Trekking made it simple. I would recommend their services to anyone looking to experience the Himalayas.
Amazing trip with Discovery!
100%! My boyfriend and I did the 9-day Annapurna Sanctuary Trek and had a blast thanks to Discovery! Paul, the founder, is very professional and responsive. He answered all of my questions before the trip and made me feel very taken care of. He also set us up with an AMAZING guide, Simbir, and a fantastic porter, Umess. They were a perfect duo for taking us through the mountains - they were knowledge, friendly, and always positive (even during the tough parts of the trek!). We saw many guides along the way, and I truly think we lucked out with Simbir. He is so nice, his English was great, he knew everything about the mountains and terrain, and he was thoughtful and checked in with us throughout the trek to make sure we were doing ok. I can’t recommend Discovery enough - go through them for all of your trekking adventures!!
