Safety and security while travelling in Nepal

Nepal is a country of spectacular beauty and is one of the top trekking destinations.

However, travelers coming to Nepal should remain aware of the possible dangers of trekking in the Himalayas, such as landslides, altitude sickness, and occasional thefts.

Our staff members can handle some contingencies properly but not all of them. Therefore we request each traveler coming to Nepal remain in touch and get registered with their respective embassies so that we can report to the respective embassy in case of emergencies. It helps you for safe travel in Nepal.

In addition to registering with your respective embassy upon arrival in Kathmandu, we advise you to make copies of your passport, visa, and other valuable documents. This will help you a lot if in case you need replacements. If you take care of your safety in the Himalayas, you will have a wonderful journey.

Nepal is a safe country to travel to. However, due to political instability, in rare cases, some incidences of assaults and harassment occur. But these attacks, especially on tourists, are rare.

Still, we request travelers not to travel single especially female travelers. However, with Discovery World Trekking, we will pay enough attention to your safety and security.

Besides, also note that difficult conditions might occur in high altitude areas, for instance, high altitude sicknesses, avalanches, landslides, etc. Therefore, you must obtain evacuation as well as medical coverage insurance.

In Nepal, there are organizations - the Himalayan Rescue Association and the Nepal Mountaineering Association, that manage insurance in Kathmandu. Similarly, another organization - the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA), provides rescue services. We do have close contact with these different organizations.

However, sometimes, contacting these aforementioned organizations is not enough, and we/you might need to contact embassies and international organizations.

Further, we suggest you not travel at night for your safety and security. While traveling, you should not leave your backpacks and luggage unattended as thieves might steal your possessions.

We encourage you to use backpacks with locks, and it is best to keep easily removed items deep inside a bag. During bus travel, it is better to bring carry-on items and all valuables with you.

The best way to avoid risks while trekking is to take proper precautions right from the moment of trek planning. Here are some precautions you need to take:

  • Do not trek alone
  • Do not display valuables such as money to others
  • Always keep your belongings secure and within your sight.
  • Make arrangements for handling emergencies beforehand in cooperation with the trekking agency, especially with us
  • Register personal information and trekking details with your respective embassy
  • Buy a traveler comprehensive insurance policy that covers helicopter rescue cost
  • Leave a copy of the essential document details with us in Kathmandu.
