Comprehensive Trek Overview

This short trip takes you to the peaceful, scenic Nagarkot hilltop, located just 32 km away from Kathmandu. Nagarkot is a popular mountain viewpoint, at an altitude of 2,100m, surrounded by lush green terrace farms and pine forests. From this viewpoint, you can get panoramic views of several mountain ranges - including, Ganesh Himal (7,422m), Gauri Shankar (7,134m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966m), Langtang (7,234m)and Rolwaling (7,181m).

It is an easy hiking trip that first takes you to Chisapani, another mountain view. At Chisapani Village, you will get a chance to observe the charming rural lifestyle and culture.

You will also visit Changunarayan temple in Bhaktapur district, the oldest temple of Nepal, with a large settlement of the Newar community living around it.

The trip begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal and then a hike up to Chisapani through Shivapuri National Park. It is a pleasant hike, and you can truly enjoy being far from the city's hustle and bustle, passing many villages and farms.

You will arrive in Kathmandu at Tribhuvan International Airport. We welcome you at the airport and take you to your hotel. You will need at least one night's accommodation in Kathmandu before the trek starts, but this package does not include this. On the trek departure date, we will take you to Sundarijal on private transport.

Trek Accommodation Details

You will be spending two nights at hotels in trek regions. The first night, you will be staying in Haibung, and for another night, you will be staying at Nagarkot. Both of these accommodations are deluxe rooms.

Meals during the trek

The Nagarkot trek takes place near Kathmandu. So, you will have plenty of nutritious food choices during your trek. You will get most of the food choices you can get in big cities in Nepal.

The food you will be having will be tasty, nutritious, and healthy. During the trek, we will provide you with three breakfasts, three lunches, and two dinners.

Best seasons for Nagarkot treks

You can complete Nagarkot treks in any season. Each season provides a unique experience. If you want to avoid rain and enjoy the views trekking on perfect trails, the spring, autumn, and winter seasons suit you. The temperatures will be cool, the skies clear, and the temperature just perfect during these seasons. The summer (May-August) season coincides with the monsoon in Nepal, so if you love rain, this is the trekking season for you.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

This trek is suitable for all age groups. In fact, you can use Nagarkot treks to prepare for long hikes. However, people suffering from sensitive health conditions like heart or lung diseases need to consult their doctors before booking this trek. The trail paths have a few ups and downs along with straightforward routes.

Trekking in Group / Single

We are ready to guide groups as well as private treks. If you have your group, you will be eligible for discounts. However, we will not provide any discounts for trek groups we assemble. Similarly, for a group with more than 11 trekkers we add an assistant guide.

A typical day

This three-day Nagarkot trek will bring new experiences each day. You will have a chance to enjoy sceneries, taste local food, take pictures and interact with the locals. At the most, you will be on the trails for six hours a day. The trek is quite easy. While staying at lodges, you are free to engage in reading books, enjoying board games like cards and Monopoly, or learning Nepali words from our crew.

Communication during the trek

Nagarkot trekking is not far from Kathmandu. So, you can use the internet at the lodges/hotels you will be staying. Similarly, you can buy a sim card in Kathmandu should you choose to remain in contact with your friends and family. Each trekking group remains in contact with the Discovery World Trekking office at least once a day via the trek guide. It ensures that the trek progresses as planned.

Electricity & water in trek regions

Electricity is available throughout the trek region. You can recharge your camera, cell phone, or other electronic gadgets in the lodges you will be staying. However, you might need to pay a service charge for the use. Similarly, you can easily buy packed mineral water from en-route shops/tea houses. We advise you against drinking water from taps, rivers, or wells in trek regions because the water may not be potable.

Extra personal expenses during the trek

Trekkers must bring personal spending money with them to cover various expenses. Meals and accommodations at Kathmandu are for the trekkers themselves. Kathmandu has all sorts of hotels/lodges for all budgets and tastes. Similarly, you need money to cover visa fees, alcoholic, hot (tea/coffee) and cold drinks, battery recharge, hot shower, bottled water, snacks, souvenirs, tips for crew, etc. We recommend you bring cash (major currencies) and exchange them for Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu.

Visa Information

All foreigners except Indians need a visa to enter Nepal. On-arrival visa is available for citizens from most countries at Tribhuvan International Airport. To apply for an on-arrival visa, you need a passport valid for at least six months, a passport-size photo, and visa fees. The current visa fee is USD 50 for a 30-day stay. Children under the age of 10 receive free visas.

Chinese and SAARC (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Sri Lanka) citizens receive a free visa.

Citizens from some countries - including Nigeria, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Palestine, and Afghanistan - may not receive an on-arrival visa, so citizens from these countries should contact their local Nepalese embassies.

Nepal Government can change visa rules without notice, so please visit www.immigration.gov.np for the latest information.

Money exchange in Nepal

Nepali Rupee is the local currency. 1 USD = ~ 130 Rupees.

You can exchange most foreign currencies through local banks and legitimate money exchanges in Kathmandu. Some hotels also exchange small amounts of foreign currencies. Legal money exchanges display their ongoing rate publicly.

We advise you to bring cash (Dollars) and exchange them for Nepalese Rupees. Though you can bring traveler's cheques, exchanging them will cost more, and you have to go through a lengthy process. You also have the option to withdraw Nepali Rupees using ATMs in Kathmandu. Many of these ATMs are open 24 hours.

Please bring new and crisp notes because most banks in Nepal will not accept faded, torn, or old notes.

How much luggage can I bring to the Nagarkot Trek?

We assign one porter for every two trekkers. However, we will not permit our porters to carry more than 18-kg of combined luggage. So, your luggage weight limit is 9-kg. Besides, we also expect you to carry a small backpack with your important things in it.

Trek Safety

Your health and well-being are most important to us. Our experienced trek leads from remote high Himalayas have completed intensive wilderness first aid training. Our team carries first aid kits ready to take on all kinds of emergencies. Furthermore, we will be trekking as a group to ensure safety.

Responsible Travel

Though tourism brings several benefits to the community in the trek regions, such as employment opportunities, infrastructure development, health facilities, and educational institutions, it might also have adverse effects. We believe in environmental protection and try our best to leave only our footprints in the trek regions. Therefore, we have partnered with Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) to conduct eco-friendly trips that benefit the trekkers as well as the local communities.

Discovery World Trekking Crew

Our crew members are from the remote high Himalayas. All our trek guides have Nepal- Government trekking licenses. They will be informing you about places as you visit. All our trek crew members are important to us. We take care of their food, lodging, hot/cold drinks, insurance, and equipment costs.

We try hard to keep our staff members happy as we believe that only a happy person can make others happy.

Our trek guides are:

  • government-licensed with years of trek experience
  • fluent in English and another major language
  • well trained in wilderness first aid
  • bio-diversity and conservation trained
  • trained in rock climbing

Nepali culture accepts tipping. However, tipping is at the traveler's discretion. We recommend you tip according to service received, trek duration, and trek cost. Tipping is best done at the end of the trek and collectively as a group.
