Guides mandatory in the protected mountainous regions from April 2023
On March 9th, 2023, Nepal Tourism Board announced major changes in trek policies. From April 1st, unguided treks are banned for tourists/trekkers. Nepal Government claims they have implemented this rule to mitigate adverse incidents such as health issues (including altitude sickness), getting lost, or difficulties rescuing during natural disasters. Most solo travelers are victims of such mishaps, and the Nepal government wants to minimize human or material loss.
After March 31st, trekkers must obtain TIMS (Trekking Information Management System) Card through authorized trekking agenciesregistered with the government. Nepal Government claims this provision will allow trekkers access to a fast support system in the face of adverse situations. In addition, the trek guides should be able to provide trekkers with the right information about Nepal as a nation.
Please note that along with this new rule, Tourism Board has revised the rate for TIMS Card. The new cost of a TIMS Card is NPR 1,000 for SAARC citizens and NPR.2,000 for all other foreigners.
