Comprehensive Langtang Gosainkunda Trek

Gosainkunda Langtang Trek is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Langtang National Park. It's situated in the northeast part of central Nepal, close to Kathmandu. In fact, it is visible from Kathmandu Valley.

This trek lets you experience deep gorges, rocky terrain, pine forests, yak pastures, insight into Buddhist religious practices, mystical monasteries, picturesque villages, hillside terraces, serene valleys, and breathtaking glaciers originating from high mountains. The trial also takes us to the sacred Gosainkunda (4,380m / 14,620ft), an alpine freshwater lake high up in the mountains of the Rasuwa.

This trek begins with a drive along the Trishuli River, which heads north from Kathmandu through Trishuli Bazaar and Dhunche and finally to Syabrubesi.

We start the trek from Syabrubesi, a Tamang village by the banks of the Bhote Koshi River. The trek will follow the Langtang River until we reach Lama Hotel for the night. The next day we will trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village, a large Tamang settlement. From Langtang Village, we head to Kyangin Gompa. We will rest at Kyangin Gompa for a day to acclimatize. While acclimatizing, you will have the option to visit the yak cheese factory, Tserko Ri Viewpoint, and Kyangin Gompa monastery.

Then we return to the Lama Hotel then continue trekking in the beautiful Langtang Valley to reach Gosaikunda, a revered pilgrimage for Buddhists and Hindus. The waters of Gosaikunda Lake are believed to have magical healing powers. But to reach Gosaikunda we trek from Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru, and from Thulo Syabru to Cholangpati and finally to Gosainkunda.

After Gosainkunda, our trek will take us through Laurebina La High Pass to Ghopte in the scenic Helambu region. From Ghopte, we descend to Kutumsang through rhododendron, pine, juniper forests, and peaceful meadows. The next day, we continue our descent to reach Chisapani via Pati Bhanjyang. On the last day of the trek, we trek from Chisapani to Sundarijal and catch a bus back to Kathmandu.

This package covers travel by public bus. However, if you seek comfort, you can book a jeep for an extra cost.

Though plenty of non-veg items are available in trek regions, we do not recommend any of them because the meat in these regions may not be hygienic and healthy.

Best time for Langtang Gosainkunda trek

The weather is the crucial factor to consider for a trek to Langtang Gosaikunda. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for an easy trek with great mountain views. During winter, the trek regions are cold due to snowfall, while the summer monsoon makes the trails slippery and wet.

January – February

This is the coldest season, especially from early January to early February. There is heavy snowfall in the mountains as the temperature dips. Daytime will be warm and admirable with clear skies but, the night is cold. Trek will be a little challenging nevertheless, you will get magical views of snow-capped hills and mountains.

March – April

It is one of the best times to trek to the Langtang and Gosaikunda. The weather is very favorable, and you can catch stunning views of the Langtang Lirung, Langtang II, and other mountains. Temperatures start increasing from mid-March, and many trekkers choose to trek to the Langtang Gosainkunda region during this time. The luscious green, dense bamboo, and birch forests add a new dimension to the whole trek experience.

May – June

This is also the perfect time for trekking, right before the monsoon. Rainfall in Nepal begins from the end of June till mid-August. The spring-summer season makes the trek much more enjoyable.

July – August

The rainfall hits its peak during this time, and you'll see clouds often. The trails will get a bit slippery but, trekking can still be fun due to the magnificent waterfalls, raging rivers, and frequent rainbows.

September – October

It is another perfect season for the Langtang Gosaikunda trek. As the monsoon slowly ends, a perfect trekking climate sets in. The temperature goes up to 20 degrees during the day and falls to 5 degrees at night. Most trekkers enjoy trekking the most during these months as the skies are clear, allowing great views of the mountains. We highly recommend this time for the Langtang Valley trek, especially between mid to end of September. Nepal's two biggest festivals - Dashain and Tihar - also fall in these months.

November – December

The winter sets in, and snowfalls begin in the Langtang region, eventually making it challenging to trek. However, you can trek during November, thanks to the sparkling days. With clear skies, the mountains look stunning, but as December starts, the temperatures dip. The nights can get cold with temperatures as low as -5 degrees Celsius.

The weather in the mountain region is unpredictable and changes quickly.

Acclimatization

Your 13-day Langtang Gosaikunda Trek package spends two nights over 3500m, where there are chances of being affected by altitude sickness, also called acute mountain sickness. We will be acclimatizing at Kyanjin Gompa. While acclimatizing in Kyanjin Gompa, we will explore various places like the Kyanjin Gompa monastery itself, the cheese factory, or a hike to the Tserko Ri Viewpoint.

Altitude sickness is common among trekkers, but serious altitude sickness requires immediate treatment, and you should not ignore it. Our trek leaders and guides have extensive first-aid training and are well-experienced. We urge you to inform your group leader and guide at the first signs and symptoms.

Your trek leader or guide will suggest precautions against altitude sickness. The best way to prevent altitude sickness is to take your time while trekking and drink plenty of water (at least 4 liters per day). If altitude sickness is severe, the only cure is to descend immediately.

Please note that your group leader has the authority to stop your ascent based on your health condition. Please keep in mind that some persons are more vulnerable to altitude sickness than others.

Trip Grade: Fitness level and Health

The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is easy and rewarding. The hiking duration will range from 3-6 hours a day, depending on the destination, taking regular breaks to admire the mountain views. The trek routes involve long climbs, steep descents, and steep forward trails in rocky paths and forests. So, the fitter you are, the more comfortable and enjoyable your journey will be. If you have trekking experience, it is advantageous but not required. We do not recommend this trek to those who suffer from sensitive medical conditions such as heart or lung disease.

A typical day on the Gosaikunda trek

Each day will bring a unique trek experience, as you enjoy the scenery, take photos, and explore the local villages. Our experienced and qualified guides will guide you to your destination. Porters will carry your luggage. However, you will need to bring with you a regular day pack to carry your essentials.

The day starts with an early morning cup of tea. After a wholesome breakfast, we set off on that day’s walk around 7 to 8 am, depending on the duration and nature of the walk. After trekking for 3 to 4 hours, we will serve you lunch often on the route to your next destination.

The afternoon hike is generally shorter 2 to 3 hours. When you reach our overnight lodge, you can enjoy our extra dietary snacks, then explore the nearby places until it gets dark. We provide dinner between 6 to 7 pm.

In the evening, before going to bed, we discuss each other's hiking experiences. Your guide will brief you about the next day's plan. After the trip briefing before going to bed, you can enjoy fun games like cards and Monopoly, watch mountaineering videos if possible, or just read books. Most of our valuable clients also love learning light Nepali words from our crews.

During the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek, internet service will be available at the lodges and comes with some extra service charge. At high altitudes, for safety purposes, we will communicate by phone. Our office will be in contact with all of our trek teams at least once a day through the lead guide to know about the team's condition. You can buy a local sim in Kathmandu but, the signals may not be strong enough.

Most lodges/ tea houses have Wi-Fi access, which you can use for an extra charge.

Electricity and battery recharge, water on trekking

Throughout the lodges at Langtang Gosaikunda Trek, electricity for the camera and mobile battery recharge is available at an extra cost. During the trek, you can buy either packed mineral water from local lodges and en-route shops or fill your water bottle with boiled water at an extra cost. If you require, we can provide you with water purification pills.

We advise you against drinking water from rivers, taps, and wells in trek regions for hygiene concerns.

Extra personal expenses

This package does not include meals and accommodations in Kathmandu. In addition, all our valuable clients need to bring spending money for visa processing, travel insurance policy purchase, snacks for the trek, hot (tea/coffee), cold and alcoholic drinks, tips, souvenirs, etc. We recommend bringing cash (major currencies), which you can easily exchange for Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu. Trek regions only accept Nepalese currency.

Langtang Gosaikunda Trek Travel Insurance

Though the chances are slim, there are chances of high-altitude sickness and other high-altitude mishaps associated with this trek. So travel insurance is compulsory for this trek. You need to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers medical and emergency repatriation - including helicopter rescue and evacuation expenses at high altitudes.

We can recommend an insurance company for you based on our valuable client's experience but, we do not sell insurance policies.

In case of an emergency, we forward your insurance details for processing to your insurance company to arrange rescue operations and transfer to the hospital for treatment. Please send us your insurance information details after booking the trek.

Please call your insurance company and recheck if they cover helicopter rescue at the highest trek elevations in addition to medical treatment costs. Do not just rely on what the insurance companies say on their website.

Tourist Visa Nepal

All foreigners, except Indians, require a visa to enter Nepal. Visa is available on arrival at the Tribhuvan international airport. You can find the latest visa information at www.immigration.gov.np

The visa application will require a passport with at least six months of validity and a passport-size photo. The current visa fee is USD 50 for 30 days, which you can pay in cash on arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport.

Citizens of China and the SAARC countries will receive a free visa. Citizens from Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan may not receive an on-arrival visa. If you are a citizen of these countries, contact your local Nepalese embassy.

Money exchange

Nepali Rupees (NPR/Rs) is the local currency.

(1 USD = ~ Rs.130 NPR).

You can exchange most foreign currencies through local banks and legitimate money exchanges in Kathmandu and all over Thamel. Legal money exchanges list the ongoing exchange rates visibly for the public. Please note that only INR (Indian Rupees) notes of 100 and 2,000 are legal in Nepal.

Despite the traveler's cheque's security advantage, we recommend cash exchange - to avoid a lengthy process and high bank commission rates. You can withdraw cash (in Rupees only) from one of the many ATMs in Kathmandu and Thamel itself. Several of these ATMs are open around the clock. The maximum withdrawal amount is 35,000 Rupees for a 500 Rupees processing fee using a foreign card.

If you use money exchange facilities at banks and financial institutions, they will charge a service fee of four percent or more.

There are no banks and money exchange services in trek regions, so you should exchange money in Kathmandu based on personal expenses. In the Himalayan region, people only accept Nepali currency.

Most banks in Asia will not accept foreign currency notes that are old, torn, or faded. Please ensure that you have new, clean notes.

How Much Luggage Can I bring to the Langtang Gosainkunda Trek?

The luggage weight limit is 9 kg per trekker. Porters will carry your luggage. We assign one porter for every two trekkers, and the combined luggage should not weigh more than 18 kg. However, we expect you to carry your regular backpack for the valuables and important documents.

We advise you to carry only the essentials. You can leave any excess baggage either at your hotel or at the Discovery World Trekking store for free.

Langtang Gosaikunda Trek Safety

Discovery World Trekking guarantees our valuable client's safety and security. We will be carrying all the necessary gear, equipment, and first aid kits for safety. Our trek leaders and guides have extensive first-aid training. While on the trek, the whole team will be together for safety. If a trekker falls sick due to the altitude, the trek leader has the authority to decide whether to continue the trek or descend based on the overall team condition.

In an emergency, a rescue helicopter will bring you back from the high elevation (funded by insurance).

Responsible travel

We strongly believe we need to protect the trek regions from the potential negative effects of tourism. So, Discovery World Trekking works together with the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) to organize eco-friendly trips that are culturally rewarding and also meet the expectation of both the travelers and trek region communities.

Discovery World Trekking Crew

During the trek, our local, licensed, and well-experienced guides/Sherpas accompany you to make your journey even more comfortable and memorable. We add an assistant guide for a group of 12 or more.

Porters will carry your luggage. If you need, we can arrange one porter per person. Please note that a porter will carry no more than 18 kg combined weight. Our crew members are local people from the remote high Himalayas, so they are completely at ease at high altitudes.

All our staff members are valuable to us, they are well-paid, and we take care of their insurance, clothing, food, and lodging throughout the hike. All our guides and porters receive medical care when ill or injured. We always make sure that our staff members are happy as we believe that only happy people can make others happy. Our crew members have:

  • Intensive Wilderness First Aid Training
  • Government Authorized Trekking certificate
  • Fluency speaking in English and other major languages
  • Conservation and biodiversity training
  • Rock climbing experience

Tipping

Nepali culture accepts tipping as a way of thanking (Dhanyabad) for good service. However, tipping is at the trekker's discretion and should reflect the quality of service provided. We advise you to tip at the end and do so collectively.

Booking and payment process

Discovery world trekking is a government-authorized, bonded trekking and touring operator in Nepal, providing these services for over a decade. We are members of the Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) and the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Therefore, you can book the Discovery World Trekking trip with confidence.

You can pay by bank transfer, western union, or online directly from our website. After arriving in Nepal, you can pay the remaining trip cost in cash, bank transfer, or using your credit card.

Furthermore, we will email you payment details - including the mode of payment and the amount for your convenience.

Last-minute booking

It is best to book trips in advance but for those unable Discovery World Trekking has a special provision for last-minute bookings. In the case of a last-minute booking, you have to complete 100% percent of the trip payment 24 hours before the trip departure date. Though we do our best to operate treks at any time, in case of last-minute booking, you cannot hold us responsible for delays due to circumstances beyond our control, such as bad weather, lodging unavailability, etc. For more information, Call/Viber/WhatsApp at 977- 9840055491 (Paul) or email [email protected]

Trip extension

After completing the Langtang Gosainkunda trek, if you have extra days in Nepal, we can arrange activities for you, such as the Kathmandu Valley sightseeing tour, a trip to Nagarkot, Chitwan jungle safari, paragliding, rafting, canyoning, or another trek.

Feedback

After the Gosainkunda Langtang Valley trek, Discovery World Trekking will host a farewell dinner at Kathmandu. After the dinner, we will present you with a Discovery World Trekking trek achievement certificate. It is also a perfect time to provide feedback about the trip.

USEFUL INFO

The Langtang Gosainkund Trek includes fixed departure dates from Kathmandu, but we can tailor this trip to accommodate your specific requests and schedule. Please review your designated departure dates, and if the time does not suit you, let us know. We can arrange a trek that is convenient for you.

The itinerary listed above is a general guideline. The itinerary might require modification due to factors beyond our control such as unstable weather, trail inaccessibility, lodging and campsites unavailability, unforeseen governmental decrees, etc. Although it is improbable that changes will occur that would significantly alter the original itinerary, you cannot hold us accountable for delays or the consequences of such delays.

In the event of an itinerary adjustment or the need to redirect to other trails and areas, the lead guide will ultimately make the final choice on the best rerouting after consulting with the group members and keeping in mind the interests of each team member.

I opted for Paul Gurung and Discovery World Trekking for the Langtang Gosaikunda trek, having received recommendations through word of mouth. Paul's professionalism, understanding, and communication skills were exceptional. He possessed an extensive knowledge of the region and was well-acquainted with the local people.

The porters and guides worked in perfect harmony, creating a joyful and cohesive team. Paul's flexibility with the itinerary was reassuring, and his competence was evident throughout the journey. I truly value the friendship that developed with Paul and consider it something to cherish. Not only was he an excellent guide, but also an exceptional photographer. The entire team provided a fantastic experience on the trek.

Paul proved to be an exceptional companion throughout our trip! Planning our journey from Australia became effortless with Paul's expert advice. Collaboratively, we crafted an itinerary, and he efficiently handled all the arrangements, including travel, accommodation, food, and securing reliable porters. The services provided exceeded our expectations and were of top-notch quality.

Paul's dedication to ensuring our safety and support was remarkable. He discreetly checked on each member of our group, always making sure everyone was okay and content. 😊 Our unity as a team, including the porters, brought us immense joy. Paul's exemplary conduct served as an inspiring role model, and his Discovery World Trekking team delivered excellence in every aspect. Without DWT, our time in Nepal would not have been as extraordinary.
