Best time for the Mustang Jeep safari (March to November)

When planning a tour of Upper Mustang Off Road Jeep Safari, it's important to consider the weather. The best seasons for comfort and views are summer and autumn. However, you can also tour in the summer. Winter sees most residents leave Upper Mustang to avoid cold and snow.

Spring (March to May), is favorable for this tour. The weather is mild with daytime temperatures ranging from 16 to 22°C, although nights can be colder, with temperatures dipping below 0°C.

Summer (June to August) is the monsoon season in Nepal, but Upper Mustang is an exception due to its location in the rainshadow area of the Himalayas. It makes it a perfect time to tour the region. The locals celebrate a horse festival called Yartung festival on the full moon day in August. The temperature ranges from 16 to 25°C during the day and 3 to 0°C at night.

Autumn (September to November) provides clear skies and great mountain views, although afternoons can be windy. Daytime temperatures range from 12 to 20°C, with nights cold at -8 to -4°C.

The tour season ends in November, and lodges close as villagers migrate to other regions to avoid the cold. Additionally, the trails become covered with snow, making tours almost impossible.

Group/single

We arrange both group and individual tours, catering to your specific needs. We can accommodate any group size. For larger groups, we offer generous discounts. We add an assistant guide for a group of twelve or more.

Trip grade and fitness

This tour is easy in terms of physical exertion. Tour members involve minimum walking as this is a Jeep tour. We will stop at various places to soak in the beauty and satisfy our curiosity. No technical skills are not necessary.

Being in good physical condition is preferable but not required for the tour. However, you might consider participating in light exercises such as jogging for a few weeks before the trip. The more physically fit you are, the more you will enjoy the tour.

To join our Upper Mustang trek (Mustang safari), you should be in average health with a positive attitude and self-confidence. If you have pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, or blood diseases, please inform us before booking the trek.

Typical day

Every day promises a fresh and exciting experience. From admiring breathtaking scenery to sampling local delicacies and exploring charming villages and towns, our knowledgeable and amiable guides will be with you at every step, sharing fascinating information about each location.

The day begins with a steaming cup of coffee or tea to energize you for the adventures ahead. After a hearty breakfast, the tour typically starts between 7 and 8 AM, depending on the hike's duration and difficulty.
After a three to four-hour drive, we stop for lunch en route to our next destination. You'll have an hour to rest before continuing with a shorter, two to three-hour afternoon tour. Once we arrive at the overnight destination, you can snack on extra dietary foods and explore the surroundings until nightfall.

We serve dinner around 6 to 7 PM, after which you can unwind with friendly conversations and reflect on the day's experiences. Your tour leader/guide will brief you about the next day's itinerary. After the briefing, you can entertain yourself by reading books, watching mountaineering videos, or playing games such as Monopoly and cards. Many visitors also enjoy learning the basics of the Nepalese language from our crew.

Electricity and water

You'll find electricity available for recharging your camera and mobile batteries in all lodges throughout the tour. However, you might have to pay for this service. For water on the trek, you can either purchase bottled mineral water from local lodges and en-route shops or refill your water bottle with boiled water available in lodges and teahouses. Additionally, we strongly recommend the use of water purification tablets before drinking.

We advise you against drinking water from rivers, taps, or wells in the trekking region, as the water may not be safe for consumption.

Communication

You can access internet services at the lodges where you will be staying, though there will be an additional service charge for using this service. You can use this connection to contact your family and friends, but at higher altitudes, we will rely on phone communication.

Our Kathmandu office will stay in touch with all tour teams through the team guide at least once daily to ensure that the tour is proceeding as expected. While you can purchase a local SIM card in Kathmandu, please be aware that signal strength may be weak in some areas.

Travel Insurance

As this trek involves moderate difficulty and high-altitude terrain, there are potential risks associated with altitude sickness and unforeseen events. Therefore, travel insurance is mandatory for all trekkers.

To ensure your trek safety, Discovery World Trekking requires all trekkers to provide a copy of their comprehensive travel insurance policy. The policy must cover medical expenses, emergency repatriation, helicopter-rescue, and evacuation expenses up to the highest trek altitude (4,000m).

While we can recommend insurance companies based on our previous clients' experiences, we do not sell travel insurance. Moreover, we request you send us a copy of your detailed insurance information within one week of booking the trek. In emergencies, we will use your insurance policy and documents to arrange an effective rescue.

Before purchasing travel insurance, please call the insurance company to confirm they provide helicopter rescue and evacuation coverage up to 4000m. Do not solely rely on the insurance company's website content.

Passport and visa

Only Indian citizens do not need a visa to enter Nepal. Other foreign nationals must have a visa to enter Nepal. However, citizens from China and SAARC (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) countries are eligible for the free visa.

Citizens from most other countries can receive an arrival visa at the Tribhuvan International Airport, provided they have a valid passport with at least six months of validity, a passport-sized photo, and visa fees. The current cost for a 30-day visa is USD50, payable in cash. Children under ten will receive a free visa. You can also get a visa at immigration checkpoints along Nepal-India and Nepal-China borders.

However, citizens of Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan may not be eligible for an arrival visa. If you are a citizen of one of these countries, you should contact your local Nepalese embassy to obtain a visa. It's important to note that visa regulations are subject to change without notice, so it's advisable to check the website of the Nepalese immigration department at https://immigration.gov.np/ for the latest information.

Money Exchange

The official currency of Nepal is Nepali Rupees (NPR/Rs), with the exchange rate being around 130 NPR for 1 USD.

You can exchange most foreign currencies through local banks and legitimate money exchanges in Kathmandu and mainly in Thamel. Legal money exchanges display current rates publicly. Please note only INR (Indian Rupees) notes of 100 and 2,000 are considered legal tender in Nepal.

While traveler cheques may offer better security, we recommend you bring cash and exchange it in Kathmandu to avoid long bank processes and high commission rates.

ATMs in Kathmandu (and Thamel) allow you to withdraw cash in Nepali Rupees. Most of these ATMs are open 24 hours. However, the maximum withdrawal amount from these ATMs is 35,000 Rupees, with a processing fee of 500 Rupees when using a foreign card. While exchanging money at banks and other financial institutions, you need to pay a service fee of around four percent or more, depending on the bank/financial institution.

It's important to note that most established banks in Asia will not accept old, torn, or faded foreign currency notes, so ensure you have new and clean notes.

Luggage

We advise you to bring only the essentials to the tour. You can leave your excess luggage at your hotel or Discovery World Trekking store for free. There is a luggage weight limit on domestic flights. You probably do not need a porter as this is a jeep tour. We will recheck your luggage during the tour briefing to ensure you have all the required things.

Extra personal expenses

At Discovery World Trekking, we cover most costs during the jeep tour. However, please note that the package price does not cover food and lodging expenses in Kathmandu, nor does it include lunches and dinners in Pokhara.

Aside from the trekking package cost, trekkers will need spending money to cover personal expenses such as visa processing fees, purchasing a travel insurance policy, buying hot (tea/coffee), cold and alcoholic drinks, snacks, tips to crew members, buying souvenirs, paying for hot showers, recharging mobile phones and batteries, and purchasing mineral water.

To cover these expenses, we recommend you bring cash in major currencies and exchange it for Nepali Rupees in Kathmandu. You can use your credit card to withdraw Nepali Rupees from an ATM, but please remember that your bank may charge a fee for this service.

Tour Safety

At Discovery World Trekking, safety is our top priority. We implement various measures to ensure your safety and security. Throughout the Upper Mustang trek (jeep tour), we carry all necessary gear, equipment, and first aid kits. Additionally, our trek/tour leaders and guides have completed comprehensive wilderness first aid training. If a trekker becomes ill, the tour leader has the authority to decide whether to continue with the trek or descend immediately. Moreover, we always hike together as a group to enhance safety. If you get seriously ill, we will deploy a helicopter (funded by insurance) and bring you to safety.

Discovery World Trekking crew

During your Upper Mustang Tour, our experienced guide will accompany you. Our team comprises locals from the high Himalayan regions, and they possess remarkable physical endurance at high altitudes. We highly value all our crew members and ensure that they are fairly compensated. In addition to salary, we provide insurance coverage, proper clothing, food, and lodging throughout the tour. Additionally, our staff members receive prompt medical attention when ill or injured.

Our primary goal is to ensure our team members are happy since only happy individuals can spread joy to others. Furthermore, our guides have undergone extensive wilderness first aid training and hold government-authorized trekking/tour guide certificates. They are fluent in English and other major languages, have received conservation and biodiversity training, and possess rock climbing experience.

Responsible travel

We know that unsustainable tourism can harm trekking regions. Hence, we make a concerted effort to minimize our impact on tour regions by leaving only footprints behind. In addition, Discovery World Trekking collaborates with the Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) to arrange eco-friendly tours that benefit both travelers and local communities in these trekking regions. We do not litter and dispose of waste properly and encourage our clients to do the same.

Booking and payment

Discovery World Trekking is a Nepal government-authorized and bonded trekking and touring operator, conducting treks and tours all over Nepal for over a decade. We are also members of the trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN) and the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), so you can confidently book trips with us.

To secure your booking, we require a 10% advance payment that you can forward to us through bank transfer, Wise, or online via our website. You can pay the remaining balance after arriving in Kathmandu, and we accept payment in cash, bank transfer, or credit card. We will let you know payment details and available modes of payment via email.

We request you send us the necessary documents, such as a passport copy, passport-sized photos, travel insurance policy, and arrival and departure flight details within a week of booking the trek.

Tipping

While tipping is not mandatory, it is widely accepted in Nepali culture as a sign of acknowledging excellent service. The tip amount is at the traveler's discretion and should reflect the quality of service provided, trip/tour length, and the cost of the trip/tour. We recommend that you tip collectively at the end of the trek.

Last-minute booking

While we recommend you book treks/tours in advance, Discovery World Trekking does offer a provision for last-minute bookings. If you choose this booking option, you must complete 100 percent of the trip/tour cost 48 hours before the tour departure date.

We always strive to conduct trek at any time. The Upper Mustang jeep tour consists of fixed departure dates from Kathmandu and Pokhara. If these dates do not suit you, we can reschedule the trek to accommodate your availability.

Please note that the itinerary provided is a general outline, and changes may be necessary due to external factors beyond our control, such as unstable weather, lodging and campsite unavailability, governmental decrees, trail and ecological conditions, and other unforeseen circumstances. While it is highly unlikely that changes will occur, you cannot hold us responsible for adjustments made due to circumstances beyond our control.

In the event of an itinerary adjustment or the need to redirect to other trails and areas, the lead guide will decide based on the best interest of the trek group.
