In this trek, we will be acclimatizing in two places; Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. This trek is relatively at ease compared to the Everest Base Camp 14 and 12 days’ trek. At Namche Bazaar, trekkers can explore the famous Sherpa town and adjust to the thin air. We will also be having a second-day acclimatization at Gokyo where we will be exploring this area. We will be sightseeing the Gokyo RI (5,430m/17,519ft) with the finest panoramic including the astonishing views of Everest and its surrounding at peaks. Then we will return back to Gokyo for lunch and then visit the landscape around Gokyo including the upper lakes and more viewpoints. . Our trekking leader and guide are well trained and experienced at high altitude and they have extensive first aid training as well. Your health and safety are important to us and we guarantee that it will be our very first priority. In case you have been rigorously affected, the only cure would be to descend immediately. Also, it is important to know that your group leader has the definitive response to decide whether you can continue the trek based on your overall health conditions.

Trip Grade: Fitness level, Medical, and Health

The Everest Base Camp trek is a challenging yet rewarding trek. The hiking will be from 5 to 7 hours a day depending the on the destination, taking regular breaks where we admire the mountain views. The trek routes involve long climbs, steep descents and a steep forward trail in the rocky paths and the forests as well. To go on such treks, the fitter, the more comfortable and enjoyable the journey will be. If you have an experience or enjoy trekking, this may be an advantage for you. This trek is not recommended to those who suffer from sensitive medical conditions such as heart or lungs disease.

Trekking group/single

The group is generally about 2 to 12 packs on the trek. A group of 8 will be accompanied by a leader, assistant guide, and porters. We are also happy to organize a single private trek with your own family time frame.

A typical day on the trek

Every day will be rewarded with a unique experience of trekking, climbing enjoying the scenery, taking photos and exploring the local villages. During the expedition, we are accompanied by experienced, friendly and qualified expert Sherpa’s sharing information and historical facts about the places as we trek. We will also be accompanied by the porters who carry our luggage’s. However, we will be carrying our small regular day bag pack of necessary items.

The day starts with an early morning hot cup of tea/coffee. After packing our bags and gorging on a wholesome breakfast, we set off on the day’s walk around 7 AM to 8 AM, depending on the duration and nature of the day’s walk. After trekking for three to four hours, lunch will be served around midday on the route to the next destination and we continue after about an hour of rest.
The afternoon walk is generally shorter; about two to three hours. Once we reach our overnight lodge/tea house/tent, we snack on the extra dietary food. We will have free time to explore nearby places.

Dinner is served around 6 PM to 7 PM. After dinner and before going to bed, we indulge in friendly conversations and discuss the experience of that day. The expedition leader/guide will brief us about the next day’s plan. After this briefing, we enjoy on board games like monopoly, cards and watch available mountaineering documentaries. Most of the foreigners indulge in light and fun learning of Nepalese language from our crew or read books before heading off to bed for a well-deserved sleep.

All the members of trekking the must provide a copy of their comprehensive travel insurance policy certificate to Discovery World Trekking. The policy must cover medical and emergency repatriation inclusive of helicopter rescue and evacuation expenses at high altitude (up to 6000m) for trekking members.
We can recommend insurance companies to help you but we don’t directly get involved in the sale of insurance policy. Members can be refused to be included in the trekking based on insufficient, improper or absence of travel insurance policy.

Trekking members are kindly requested to send their detailed insurance information once they book for the trekking. In case of emergency situations, we will be using the insurance policy and informational documents you sent us. This will help us arrange a quick and effective rescue operation, transfer for emergency medical help etc. Please ensure that the insurance company includes the cost incurred for mountain rescue service at the highest elevation of the trekking.

Before you buy travel insurance (Don't just believe them what they say in their website) make sure you call them and recheck if they have Heli-rescue and evacuation up to 6000m according to your trekking height.

Passport and visa

All foreigners except Indians, require a visa to enter Nepal. Visa is available on arrival in the Tribhuvan international airport. Visa can be extended at the central immigration office www.immigratiion.gov.np The visa application will require at least a passport of 6 months’ validity, and a passport size photo. The current cost of visa fee is the US $40 for 30 days which have to be paid in cash on arrival on Tribhuwan Internation Aiport. Citizens of China and the SAARC countries will receive a free visa. There are certain countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, and Afghanistan)that may not receive the visa on arrival and so you will have to contact your local Nepalese embassy.

Money exchange

Nepali Rupees (NPR/Rs) is the local currency.

(1 USD = ~ Rs.100 NPR).

We can exchange most of the foreign currencies through local banks and legitimate money exchanges in Kathmandu and all over Thamel. Small amounts of cash can also be exchanged at the hotel.

The ongoing rate of exchange is visibly displayed. The government of Nepal has banned the import, export and use of 500 and 1000 Indian Rupee note in Nepal. You should ensure that you are not carrying these notes on arrival in Nepal as they will be confiscated and you may also be fined.
Despite having security advantage of traveller's cheque, we prefer cash exchange to avoid hassles like a lengthy process and high rate of commission at the banks. You can withdraw cash (in Rupees only) from one of the many ATMs in Kathmandu and Thamel itself. There are quite several ATMs that are open around the clock. The maximum withdrawal amount is 35,000 Rupees for a 500 Rupees processing fee if you are using your foreign card.

If you use the money exchange facility at banks and financial institutions the service fee charge imposed is about four percent or more depending upon the bank.

During the trek, there are no banks and money exchange services so you should exchange your money in Kathmandu only, depending on how much personal expense you require as in Himalayan region people only accept Nepalese Currency

Most of the established banks in Asia will not accept foreign currency notes that are old, torn or faded. Please ensure that you have new, clean notes

This was my first time trekking with Discovery World Trekking, and I can promise you it won’t be my last. From the moment we arrived in Kathmandu, everything was taken care of for us. Dol, our guide, was beyond amazing and made the trek truly special. His infinite wisdom about Nepal, the Himalayas, and everything in between, made him an incredible resource. Dol and our porter made sure we were well taken care of the entire trip. It was interesting noticing how Discovery seemed to have great relationships with all of the tea houses, because while other trekking groups struggled to nail down accommodations, we never faced such difficulties. We’d arrive, and within minutes we’d be sipping on tea. I can’t stress enough how professional and easy Discovery made this experience. It was great knowing Paul was always available Incase anything came up. If you have the opportunity to trek with Discovery, do not pass it up!

My boyfriend and I just returned from a 15 day trek in the Everest Region. This was my second time using this company, and I continue to be blown away by their excellent service and attention to detail. The itinerary was great - well paced to adjust to the altitude without feeling to slow. Our guide, Dol, was a real gem. He identified mountains, shared stories of growing up in Nepal, and provided cookies and motivation when we needed them most. I looked forward to trekking with him again, and am so happy it worked out. Our porter was also very friendly and helpful, jumping to fill water and deliver our bag to our room before we even thought to ask. Discovery thinks of everything. Paul is always a phone call away in case of any issues, and small touches like fresh fruit after dinner made us the envy of all of the otter trekking groups. Importantly, the staff also has a great relationship with tea houses and airports along the way, which helps to smooth the inevitable challenges of trekking during the high season. I look forward to making a third trip to Nepal in the future, and can’t wait to travel with Discovery again!

I joined DWT trip to hike up to Everest Base Camp through Gokyo. The walk was quite challenging but provided some of the best views I have ever seen before. Both the stunning landscape and the local inhabitants left me in awe of this amazing world. DWT provided our group with excellent tour guides who really went the extra mile to ensure that the trip was as seamless and trouble free as possible. The crew kept us informed of the challenges for the day and ensured that even the slowest in the group was looked after. I could not have had a better experience in the Himalaya. Thank you to Paul and his wonderful team. Vallan

My cousins and I trekked to Everest Base Camp with Discovery World trekking in October/November 2013. I have travelled extensively and I have got to say this trip was the most spectacular I have ever been on. Paul and the team from DWT were simply fantastic. Our flight out to Lukla was cancelled due to bad weather so Paul arranged for us to get there by helicopter the next day, this in itself was just the most amazing experience! The guides were fantastic and we all still keep in contact today. I spent my birthday in Namche Bazar and Paul and his team organised a school full of children to sing me happy birthday as I walked into town and a huge chocolate birthday cake that night. I would have no hesitation recommending DWT for anyone travelling to Nepal. These guys will make you feel like part of the family and make sure you have an amazing time!

This has been by far the greatest trekking experience in my life, and this was possible thanks to Discovery World Trekking, its management and guides. The landscape was absolutely breathtaking. We were in a group of 6, our guides were the friendliest guides I have ever met, they were always looking after us, checking that we were in the right condition to keep going, checking that we had no AMS symptoms, always making sure that we had enough water, and not to mention their hospitality when we were in the tea houses. Unfortunately one of our friends got sick with AMS and they were very professional about it, they looked really well after her and organized everything for her to fly back to Kathmandu and get medical treatment. I can highly recommend their services, they can organize everything according to what you want, the group I was with was going to EBC and Island peak, as I was travelling alone I wanted to trekk in a group to EBC and Gokyo lakes, so they managed to organize my trekk with the group to EBC and then we splitted and I had a guide to Gokyo. Thanks to Paul and all his team, I arrived to Nepal knowing no one and with big expectation about the trekk andI left with new friends and the greatest memories of my trip.

I hiked EBC with Discovery World Trekking mid June for the 15 day trek via Gokyo and the Cho La Pass with my guide Karan and porter Rohit. I contacted Paul, the owner via email when I arrived in Kathmandu enquiring about solo travellers. He replied swiftly and told me the exact location of his office so I could discuss it further face to face. As this was my first trek of this size we agreed on a porter and guide. Paul talked me through the itinerary and answered any questions I had with passion and enthusiasm. You could tell he loves his job, and that is what you are after when choosing someone to organise this kind of thing! Karan, my guide, picked me up directly outside where I was staying and we got a taxi to the airport togehter. This made the early morning start alot easier and put me at ease straight away. Throughout the whole trek Karan was the perfect guide. He was attentive, kind and funny; always making sure I had everything I needed food and waterwise. He checked my oxygen levels for early signs of acclimatisation sickness and played a lot of card games with me to keep me company. Rohit my porter was also great. Making sure my bag was in my room when we arrived for the night and also joining in on countless card games. Right at the very top I got abit of acclimatisation sickness. Karan was very quick to help offering water, garlic soup and medicene. Paul also called me to make sure I was ok and talk me through my options if I needed them. Luckily for me, the only way was down from here so by the end of the day I felt a lot better. However this may not be the case for everyone so it's good to know how quick and responsive the team is when you need it. When I did finally make it to Base Camp it felt a massive relief and achievement. Karan gave me a little medal as a gift. This was a nice personal touch from the company and I really appreciated it. Unfortunately for me, due to the time of year (now late June) the weather at Lukla was not ideal and flights out at this point we're very irregular and scarce (factor this in moneywise if you come a similar time). I ended up being there for 3 extra days waiting it out. During this time I had calls from Paul checking up on me and making sure everything was ok. Eventually I decided to get a helicopter back to Kathmandu as we didn't know how long i'd be waiting in Lukla. Karan was great at arranging this for me, organising everything and finding other passengers to make sure I got the best deal I could. Thanks again to Paul, Karan and Rohit for making this achievement a great achievement. The level of care this company has is what you are after when choosing someone to organise this trek for you, and I would highly recommend them to anyone!!
